Garbage Disposals
Garbage disposals are probably a “cook’s best friend”. They grind up and wash away the rejects of a kitchen in just a simple “touch of a switch”. A garbage disposal seems to be the most wonderful kitchen fixture, until the time comes when they begin to smell. The “odor” can be something very difficult to remove; however there are some ways that you can do to prevent this from happening. It starts with the right ways of cleaning your garbage disposals.
Cleaning Garbage Disposals
These important steps should be followed when cleaning garbage disposals to keep it smelling good and working right:
Step 1
Different types of garbage disposals will have different directions when it comes to its use and cleaning. They will likely have information to help you be aware of what needs to be done for it to work properly, follow the directions. Generally, a good way to run a garbage disposal is placing the garbage in and grinding it up with strong streams of water through the faucet.
After grinding every bit of garbage, straight away place the sink’s stopper and fill the sink with about two-thirds of water. While the water fills the sink, add a good amount of “liquid dish soap”. Once the kitchen sink is full of soapy water, quickly remove the sink’s stopper and turn on the disposer again. This will allow for the insides of the garbage disposal to be cleaned.
Rinse the garbage disposal in the same way, the huge amount of water flushed through the drain at one time will help get rid of the sticking garbage on the walls of the grinder. Allow water to run through its pipes for thorough washing of the garbage.
Step 2
You may want to use just cold water with your garbage disposal as you wouldn’t wan tot melt fats in some foods that go down the pipes of the drain –this will cause clogging.
Step 3
Avoid over-filling the sink with rubbish that must go in the bin instead. The garbage disposal should be used only with the things that need to be grinded such as food stuff.
Step 4
Don’t use any form of chemicals such as drain cleaners and bleach, or any other chemical type inside the garbage disposal as it may damage the unit.
Step 5
Be always careful on the things that are placed inside the grinder –you may not want the unit shattering up hard bones or even glass. Finally, always run string streams of water “before, during, and after” every use of the garbage disposal.
Taking Care Of The Unit
Always clean the unit on a daily basis to avoid garbage disposal problems such as smell and clogging. Also make sure to run “soapy water” in it every day, and keep big pieces of products or food out of the equipment. Ensure that drains or screens of the garbage disposal are drained properly.
One way of removing odors from the unit is considering throwing down some nice-smelling things in it, such as lime or lemon that gets rid of the odor. Of course, proper cleaning considerably helps, but sometimes using cleaners help in keeping away odors. Also, one way of keeping the garbage disposal working right is by letting it grind some “ice cubes” every now and then –this will help in sharpening the blades of the disposal.
Garbage Disposal Breakdown
There might be times that a garbage disposal suddenly stops working. This may be a big problem especially when you rely on it to get some things done. There are some things you can do when this happens. First, turn it off for a several minutes then press reset button. If it still doesn’t start, inspect the disposal if you will be able to unclog it at its bottom. If this isn’t the case, try to dislodge whatever is lodged in it –NEVER put the hand into it or any sharp object. If the problem is still there, consider calling a professional for assistance.
Maintaining and cleaning the garbage disposal properly, will help avoid unfavorable smells, as well as preserve the unit’s functionality. Garbage disposals are big kitchen necessities.
